The ace filmmaker Karan Johar who made his entry in Bollywood by helming the romantic film ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in the lead roles, recalled the story of how he cast Rani Mukerji in his debut film and the moment he realised that she was going to be a huge star.
In an interview with designer Prabal Gurung in New York City, Karanrecalled how he went to every lead actress to do the Rani part.Karan revealed that everyone had said no to him. It started withTwinkle Khanna, and he wrote the character for her. But she didn’t feel the part and then he went to several other actresses, who all said no to him.
Elaborating further, the filmmaker added that it was Aditya Chopra who told him about Rani Mukerji and asked him to meet her. Karan added that he went to Rani’s place, and narrated the film, and Rani told him that she would take a day to decide.
Narrating the story of when he realised that Rani was going to be a star, Karan shared that they were filming the song ‘Koi Mil Gaya’, it was Shah Rukh, Kajol and Rani. He added that Rani was the only one who’d rehearsed the song. They were shooting, and the first thing they did was the hook step. Karan further added that Farah Khan was the director of choreography. Shot got over and Kajol and Shah Rukh looked at Rani, and Kajol told her that she was doing something wrong. At that moment, from the mic, Farah said, ‘She’s the only one doing it right, you all are all doing rubbish’. And in that moment, a star and her confidence was born.
