Suryakumar Yadav included in ODI World Cup 2023 squad despite poor run of form

India announced their ODI World 2023 squad on September 5, Tuesday. India captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the names of the 15 members who were picked up to play the ODI World Cup 2023 via a press conference at Kandy in Sri Lanka.

Prasidh Krishna and Tilak Varma, two members of India’s 17-man Asia Cup team, as well as Sanju Samson, the travelling reserve, were left out of India’s ODI World Cup squad. The remaining 15 Asia Cup squad members were chosen to lead India’s quest to repeat the heroics of 2011 when Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men won the ODI World Cup on home soil.

The team will be led by Rohit Sharma, and Ishan Kishan has earned a spot in the squad following a strong showing with the bat in the middle order. In addition to skipper Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Suryakumar Yadav will lead India’s batting line-up in the multi-nation event.

Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Shardul Thakur were also named to the squad as the selection committee and team management prioritised batting depth. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj will lead the pace attack, while spinner Kuldeep Yadav has also been named to the squad. Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur have been named all-rounders and will compete in the World Cup.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Selection

India batter Suryakumar Yadav has not been able to replicate his prolific T20I format in ODI cricket. Yadav, who himself accepted that he is yet to crack the code in ODI cricket has been included on the basis of the potential that the batter possesses.

Suryakumar made his ODI debut on July 18, 2021, playing against Sri Lanka. He marked his arrival on the international stage by scoring his maiden ODI fifty just three days later, on July 21, 2021. Despite his promising start, Yadav’s performance in the 50-over format has been underwhelming. In his 26-match ODI career, he has managed to accumulate only 511 runs.

Yadav’s recent performances in ODIs have been a mixed bag. His scores against the West Indies included 19, 24, and 35. However, he had a disappointing series against Australia where he failed to score a single run. This dip in form led to discussions within the Indian team management about utilising Yadav as a finisher in the ODI side, particularly at the No.6 spot. The idea was to leverage his high-risk approach and ability to get going from the first ball, traits that have served him well in the T20 format.

Yadav while speaking during the ODI series vs West Indies had said that he has been given a specific role by the Indian team. Yadav said that he was expected to come out in the last 15 overs and use his aggressive batting style to provide a strong finish to the Indian side.

Yadav will get a few more games to get ready for the ODI World Cup 2023.
